Walking

New sign at the Pink Ranch

I started walking again today. It's just amazing how exercise clears your mind from all the clutter we have absorbed from our daily lives interactions. Today, as I walked, I saw so many roses I felt I was in some kind of paradise. I could smell the scent as I walked briskly passed them. I have been noticing how everything is so green in North Texas. It is truly a feast for the eyes. It is so simple to go for a brisk walk down your neighborhood. Yet we find one million excuses not to do it. We know is good for the body, the mind and the spirit. But so often we are so easily distracted by petty things. We just put doing exercise at the bottom of our Things To Do list. It not only relieves stress. Walking makes you find a physical and emotional place within a community. Walking "dis-isolates" you. You are part of the whole organism of community once again. As I walk I do positive affirmations (Is this a redundancy?). I am so grateful that all my six senses are functioning. I remember reading Emerson and Thoreau and their deep felt joy and wonder while talking walks. I am going to check out those books again at the library. They are so articulate in defining our humanity and its relation with nature. Walking is an effective antidote for stress. I'm walking again this afternoon. Who knows? I might find new treks, new trees to hug or new ideas.

Walking has saved my sanity, literally, over the years... i don't drive, never have and i watch as people spend their whole lives traveling in little bubbles (cars) i on the other hand interact with my neighbors, meet the most amazing people at bus stops and feel connected to the environment i have chosen to live in... As a family we use my husbands car on w/ends but during the week i spend time walking and talking with my children and like the other day, picking up a lost dog... Sometimes i wonder if people are afraid of intimacy because walking eventually leads to connection with others and i wonder if some people are afraid of this?

Good on you! I should get to walking, but I seem to be too lazy to get out there & do it. However, in my defense, I do go to the gym & get out on the golf course so I'm not just a couch potato or a person who stays all day at the computer (although I'm here reading & typing way too much).

nolly- you are just incredible, I would love to lead an eco friendly life like yours. People have forgotten the pleasure of walking.

Natalie_ Sunsets are powerful events for the soul, remember the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry?

I am so with you on this. Often I spend too much time inside in the stale air. There is always another thing to do... I often feel tired, dull... but if I have to run out to the store, or in NY when I had to hit the street to get to work, I often have to drag my arse... until I hit the fresh air. Even when it's hot air, I feel completely revived.

I do walk often, and that is how my whole animal adventures started in Houston... thanks to walks in the park next to me. I am glad you got out and wrote about it to us. Emerson and Thoreau led enviable lives. I made my way out to Walden pond when I lived in New England, but I think I'd appreciate it much more now...

NOlly- People think Mean and cold when they think of people in NYC, but because you are always walking, you meet and talk to more people (and more doggies) than anywhere I've ever lived where they think people are more polite. The best thing is it's full of all races, beliefs and income levels and for the most part, all manage to get along. Not such a bad place... I SO MISS WALKING In my city. I walk a little here, but it's all so spread out.

Wonderful post. I've been walking this spring, too, and it has been a lovely thing. Lots of rain last week, so I need to get my walking shoes on this week and get back at it. It does clear the mind of cobwebs, doesn't it?

Yes, walking and the American Romantics...I love the combination, too. I was inspired to walk from the same sources. Were you part of the 'back to nature'movement of the 70's? We always were looking for ways to connect with nature. I had a bike plate that said "Look ma. No exhaust." I love to walk. I wish I could explore the hills around here more but a woman alone on the street...attracts too much trouble...sometimes I just want to risk it anyway. You seem to be doing well! Take care, friend. <3

Hi there PC! When I lived in England I walked everywhere because I didn't need a car. Living in the US makes that almost impossible so I try and try to get out and walk on the weekends around my neighbourhood and sometimes when I am at work. I have started to photowalk which is a blast although I have some angry looking homeowners glare at me when I am snapping pics of their front yards!

I agree that nothing clears the head like a good walk. My favorite is down the way, across the road and the field and through the Fort, then down the hill, across the creek, over the fence, up the hill, around the ravine and finally across the road back home. I always feel like a brand new person, ready to figure out how to raise my kids so that they don't turn into felons!
