Moving About

If you are what you eat then I must be a pizza. We are moving to a new apartment to the north of the city. As you might expect there is a lot of coming and going. Grabbing something to eat on the run has become routine. We've been lifting, wrapping, unwrapping, pushing and sliding. Poor Pretzel, he feels so unsettled. He's been howling like the wind all day long. I had to have a straight man to dog talk with him. It is often unsettling to move to a new place. I am a bit of a gypsy so I'm use to it. In fact, I've moved more that 18 times through my life. Lately my desire to settle down is much stronger. From the balmy Caribbean to the barren winter cold of central Maine, I've lived in many different climates. I read on the World Almanac that about 20% of American are on the move, so to speak, every year. I think that's a very high number of people. That would be around 40 million people changing homes any given year. We are a very mobile society. On one hand is can frustrating and sad to leave friends and family behind but on the other we are being exposed to different people a different lifestyles like never before in our history. I have a little trick to feel comfortable once you have reached your new location. Go tree hunting. By this I mean to go out for a walk in search of trees you could befriend. I adore trees and the more I feel surrounded by them the safer I feel. Sometimes I think I must have been a druid in ancient times. I feel a sense of deep reverence for trees, specially old ones. Forests become cathedrals in my mind, true places of worship. Trees symbolize ancestry, roots. Trees make me feel like I belong. This very morning I took a long walk to find my trees. I saw a couple of them with high possibilities of becoming gorgeous specimens once the Spring arrives. As I travel around and move from place to place it is very reassuring to know beautiful and majestic trees are about to be met and make me feel welcome everywhere.

Yes-yes-yes!! Me, TOO!! I have a spiritual connection to trees and feel happy and secure when I'm surrounded by them. Worship, ancestry, majesty...((sigh)) I like to put my hands on them to feel comfort and strength.

Lovely post and my thoughts are with you this week. I've only moved 13 times and not once in the last 20 years.

Cowboy - I am visiting here from over at Clay's place. This post is great, especially the part about loving trees. I love trees too. I even wave to my favorites when I drive by them. I guess I was a druid too! ;)

Good luck in your new place. I will visit again.

I too felt like a forest of trees was a true church, cathedral or place of worship ever since I was a very young child. I could never understand why people built buildings to worship!
Hug one of you trees for me will you :)

Ah! I hope that you settle in well! One day, when the wind is off my back I will settle. Oh, and I am made of Oreo cookies.

Pizza and moving boxes, but with friendly trees. The latter makes it a little better. Your post reminds me of the ents- personalities indeed!

New to your site, but love it.

I hope you've had the experience of encountering a forest of redwood trees. There is nothing for me more wondrous than standing at the base of one of those giants and staring upward into the unknown. You want to hug them, but know you'd need at least 30 people holding hands just to get around one. And then there's the REALLY big ones.

I find comfort in trees too, Cowboy.
When I was younger, I moved 24 times in 24 years, never celebrating a birthday in the same house twice. I too, used trees as anchor points but didn't realise that until now. Hmm...
Thankyou.xx

What a beautiful post... And a great idea. I move a lot myself. I can see how seeking trees is a good thing to do when moving because they seem solid, stable, strong and THEY have the roots that perhaps I might not. And therefore they can ground you.

If I lived nearby, I'd offer to come help you pack. I think it's a nice way to visit with your friends, to chat while packing. Or painting the new place. And Pizza is essential for that!

I too have moved many, many times -- lived in 5-6 cities now and have moved about every 2 years in each of those. It is getting to the point that I am more drawn to the idea of picking somewhere and settling in. Moving gives me the excuse to constantly streamline my posessions (a very good thing) but as the years compound, the stuff that remains does grow and I am not so delighted with always having storage areas. A house, someday... I know it's coming...

I'm like you - happiest surrounded by trees. Some people like the beach. Not me. Give me the woods any day.

Best wishes with your move.

Hi! I found your site through Natalie. YES! I love trees as well. And at one time in my life, loved the adventure of a good move! Not so much any more! Now, I find it stressful, etc, etc. But thankfully, there are always trees, wherever you land. Good luck with your move.

TPC,
Hey you! moving is a trip and I've done my share either moving myself, or my kids, or helping a friend. Its fun at the time and yes the smell of pizza is so fashionable at fellowship times such as these.
Trees? you're kidding? I love them to the point that my daughter has stated that when I'm in a wheel chair in my later years she will wheel me out to a forest and serve me ice cream and creal. The Bach type food snacks....
Hoping you're not too sore from the move!
Best,
The Bach

I feel the same way about trees. I feel safe, secure and happy when trees are near. I can not feel "at home" unless there are trees around me. In fact, when we look for a house, the trees are more important to me than the house itself. I love to sit beneath a tree when the breeze is playing through the leaves, causing them to flutter and rustle. I love their smell, their shape, and the shade that they provide.
I have a book called "The Healing Energies of Trees" by Patrice Bouchardon. It's a wonderful resource for a tree lover.
